Piña In Modern Filipino Weddings

No fabric is probably more uniquely Filipino than piña. It is a testament to our colorful history and is one of the finest products of Filipino craftsmanship. Painstakingly handwoven from the pineapple fiber, the piña fabric is identified with traditional formals and is the deluxe choice for Filipiniana wedding gowns and barongs. In this age of themed weddings and modern celebrations, however, can the piñafabric still be relevant?
Piñaflor, a Lumban-based wedding shop specializing in piña fabrics and embroidery, tells us how.

Piña and Beach Weddings
With the Philippines dotted with beautiful islands and beaches, both locals and foreigners alike cannot resist saying their I Do’s with the ocean and sunset as their wedding backdrop. As what Ms. Mae Anonuevo, manager of Piñaflor, shares, “what could be a more perfect match to a beach wedding celebration than a fabric originating from a tropical fruit?”

The piña fabric, which can be used as wedding attire or wedding theme accents, can hold gracefully against strong ocean breeze with its firm material. It is also cool and lightweight enough for warm, outdoor celebrations. More importantly, its  glossy quality lends elegance, making a bride’s wedding gown looks chic even in a informal, beach wedding party.

Piña and Garden Weddings
Another popular wedding theme nowadays is garden wedding celebrations. And why not, as we have picturesque garden wedding venues in the areas of Antipolo, Tagaytay, Baguio and even in the midst of metropolitan Manila.
Ms. Anonuevo says that contrary to what most brides might think,piña fabric is not just limited to its usual off-white or ivory color.Piñaflor can dye the fabric with different colors to make it look modern and exciting.  Or they can put a modern twist on the timelesspiña fabric by handpainting it with either pastel or bright hues, whichever complements the garden wedding theme.  More than adding colors, this art of handpainting an already handwoven fabric makes any bridal gown not just high-end couture but a true art form.

For those of you who remember Metrophoto’s wedding giveaway contest last year, you will remember our winners, Pipo and Chaz and their heart-warming story of love and pure selflessness.
Pipo and Chaz are both full-time missionaries for Singles For Christ (SFC) and Kids For Christ (KFC) respectively. They met while fulfilling both their hearts desire to serve the Lord and in turn they found each other.
Today is their wedding day and as we start this very momentous event for them and for Metrophoto, we’d like to share to you their e-session photographs that we shot in one of Chaz’ huge kids summit last month. It was such an extensive and fun event that thousands of kids from all over the country attend to have fun and share each other’s faith for God.
Enjoy the photos and watch out for their wedding photos soon. And of course the next Metrophoto Wedding Giveaway is just around the corner so do watch out for that as well.

Piñaflor to be featured at I Love Pinas/ I Love Piña

Lumban is known as the "Embroidery Capital of the Philippines". The art of hand-embroidering Barong and Saya has been the main specialty of the residents of Lumban.

Piñaflor, an embroidery business in Lumban, continues to support hand-embroidery and the use of piña fiber in making traditional Filipino wedding dress.  Nowadays, most designers would use modern gown fabric but Dra. Rhodora Peñaflor Añonuevo has chosen to preserve this tradition.

Dr. Añonuevo with a staff from ZOE Get to know more about the excellence of Lumban embroidery with Piñaflor as Dr. Añonuevo invites us to mingle with them on June 30, 2011. Tourist officers from Bulacan will also be there to share with us this experience.

The business was also featured in I love Pinas/ I love Piña of the ZOE Broadcasting Network.

Keeping the Traditional Philippine Wedding Gown Alive

One of the Philippines’ most famous products is the piña fiber. Born during the Spanish occupation, the piña fabric was a symbol of a defiant race against the rule of Spaniards that Filipinos were forbidden to have any imported fabric next to their skin. Now, it has become part of the identity of Filipinos worldwide.

This ivory-white colored fiber is made from pineapple leave fibers and manually loomed by expert weavers. Being labor intensive, it has become one of the most luxurious indigenous fibers in the country. This indigenous material is commonly used to make traditional Filipino wedding dress and formal attires. But before a designer is able to create a masterpiece using this fabric, it takes about one whole week to weave piña fabric enough for a bridal gown. After that, it takes approximately two months to complete a fully hand-embroidered piña wedding gown. With the introduction of Western fabric and other alternatives like silk and cotton, Filipino wedding fashion designers have slowly shun away from using the piña fiber.  Read more ...

Pinaflor (SImply Rockflower): Wedding Gowns in Laguna

Pinaflor creates fabrics and other hand made crafts from the finest quality in Lumban, Laguna. You can buy Pinaflor products at A. Lavin St. Salac, Lumban, Laguna or check out the Page in Facebook and look for Pinaflor.

Inspired by fine embroidery, Filipino culture and a good friend, Ernest Santiago, we offer fabrics and crafts from classic to a range of other cultures that best defines fabrics.

Our shop has been producing fabrics since 2007. The process has changed little over the last few years. We incorporated handpainting and other crafts, aside from the usual Pina cloths to be made into Barong Tagalog. The crafters create their masterpieces as their ancestors have done for years using traditional hand embroideries This gives our fabrics their unique blend of color and quality.

We are proud of our culture and we are committed to protecting and furthering the industry that has helped shape the town of Lumban.
